- John F.(1917–63), US Democratic statesman, 35th president of the US 1961–3; full name John Fitzgerald Kennedy; known as JFK. The youngest person to be elected to the presidency, he was a popular advocate of civil rights. In foreign affairs he recovered from the Bay of Pigs fiasco to demand successfully the withdrawal of Soviet missiles from Cuba during the Cuban Missile Crisis, October 18–29, 1962. On November 22, 1963, he was assassinated while riding in a motorcade through Dallas, Texas. Lee Harvey Oswald was charged with his murder.
