  - a sedative drug that was found to have an adverse effect on embryonic or fetal development, especially of the limbs, in children whose mothers were prescribed it during early pregnancy to treat morning sickness. It was withdrawn from use in the early 1960s but may now be prescribed, under extremely strict guidelines, to treat certain diseases.
